The PENSTAR Jewelry brand story started in Australia in 2007 with some casual dabbling in the jewelry industry as a sole trader, selling gold plated fashion jewelry and a few sterling silver bracelets at markets and at the occasional home party. We've come a long way since then! My interest in jewelry became more than a passing phase and I traveled to India in 2008 to the famous Johari Bazar jewelry market in Jaipur, India where I learned jewelry casting, finishing, and polishing at the Indian Institute of Gems & Jewellery.
Once back in Australia, I imported jewelry from India and Thailand to sell on eBay but the desire to produce "something different," was my number one jewelry goal and after much thought, the idea of jewelry with interchangeable beads (etc.), came to mind. It wasn't that interchangeable stones or ornaments in jewelry hadn't been done before, just look at the legendary Pandora bracelet! But I wanted to produce my own interchangeable jewelry concept that could be applied across a broad range and style of jewelry items, a unique concept that could be patented. After much thinking, experimenting and drawing potential interchangeable jewelry concepts, I shelved the idea, and it remained nothing more than a "hopefully one day" concept for several years. None of the prototypes I designed met each of the strict goals of producing interchangeable jewelry that was:
1. Cosmetically Appealing, 2. Relatively easy to manufacture, and 3. Easy for our valued customers to quickly understand and use.
In the meantime, in 2013, I entered into a licensing agreement with Ford Brand Licensing and developed a range of mostly men's sterling jewelry based around Ford brand names and logos. You can see some of these in our gallery section. However, I couldn't shake the idea of producing my own interchangeable jewelry concept and again spent many hours thinking and experimenting. I often keep pen and paper next to my bed just in case a thought came to mind while trying to get to sleep!
The goal was "simple" enough: Produce jewelry that is easy to manufacture, cosmetically pleasing, easy to use, and of course, have interchangeable ornamental objects such as beads! I eventually came up with several potentially workable ideas and after many more hours of testing and refining prototypes, I had a number of jewelry innovations that met my three objectives. In conjunction with a CAD artist and a jewelry manufacturer in Bali, my initial designs for dangle earrings with interchangeable beads, became a reality. I added springs to each set of dangle earrings to assist with the secure interchange of beads, and the concept became a successful working model! So, the jewelry pieces you see on our website are the culmination of years of designing, experimenting, prototyping, and producing interchangeable jewelry!
More styles of interchangeable bead earrings are close to being produced and will be available for purchase at
penstar.com later in 2026-7. Much more is in the pipeline and a broad selection of interchangeable jewelry will be rolled out in the coming months. Not just interchangeable beads jewelry, but cabochons and other types of gemstones. These jewelry items with be available in rings, pendants, bracelets and of course, earrings.
